The Ten Oxherding Pictures in Zen Buddhism Pt. 1of 2Jan 18, 2012
by Mike Watters through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org. This excellent project explains clearly and succinctly the essential meaning of these most famous artistic expressions of Buddhism. Watters explains clearly the relationship of these with Daoist tradition and elucidates the special Chan/Zen take on the elusive nature of the mind. From taming it to riding it to leaving it and returning home to the people again, this classic work is one of the best and most comprehensive explanations of Zen Buddhism I have seen. Super narration, visuals, music - all of it!

A weekly program devoted to Buddhism, produced by the Union Bouddhiste de France and broadcast on France 2, from 8 to 8:45 every Sunday, as part of "Les Chemins de la Foi" (Paths of Faith). Extract (unedited): I feel like nowadays people are ruled by the world. The world is... has so much; there is so much aggression and speed, and people's principles... they're not sure what their principles are. So how do you lead your life, how do you best control or manifest? And the principle here is that we trust our inherent strength and we call this basic goodness. It's the notion of primordialness, inherent strength; so if we have confidence in that, then we can actually direct the mind in the direction that we want to go. And I think that nowadays people are much more reactionary, just reacting to things. So how do you live the way you view your life? So it really depends on the strength and confidence of each person, how they feel like they want to be. And I feel like this is a very critical area, because we are in a time where we have to have compassion and strength, these are very strong principles and be successful at it. I feel like, in ...

www.youtube.com www.encognitive.com ALBERT EINSTEIN "Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural & spiritual, and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity." Is Buddhism a religion? Whether Buddhism is or is not a religion depends upon how you define "religion." Government census offices and public opinion pollsters generally recognize Buddhism as a religion. Books that describe the religions of the world generally cover Buddhism along with Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc. Even the Boy Scouts of America, who expel Atheists, Agnostics and homosexuals, accept Buddhists as members. The Drepung Loseling Institute states: "Like all major religions, Buddhism contains an explanation of the origin of existence, a morality, and a specific set of rituals and behaviors. ... Buddhism presents a transformational goal, a desire to improve one's situation, and a distinct moral code. 5 However, some definitions of "religion" require a belief in the existence of one or more deities. That would disqualify most branches of Buddhism from being considered as religious groups. www.religioustolerance.org
